ARTIFICIAL PODS

As I said in "Fights in captivity" one of the main reasons of aggression between captive killer whales is that they live in an environment of artificial pods. This is what these artificial pods are about:

The majority of orcas in captivity are resident orcas meaning that in the wild they would typically travel in a large family pod consisting of 20 - 40 individuals of which they would rarely disperse from. Each different family pod has a distinct set of discrete calls that the pod uses to communicate with each other.

In captivity, orcas are forced to live with incompatible orcas from other family units who communicate with a completely different dialect/set of calls than they do. This leads to serious cases of aggression and bullying amongst these artificial pods.

In the wild, resident pods are large in numbers and are rarely separated from each other, yet in captivity the unnaturally small pods of orca are shipped to different facilities and are constantly separated for breeding, performing and various other events. It is very rare for captive orcas to be united with their complete pod as they're pod is constantly divided up within several tanks, which hold between 1 - 6 individuals.

As said above, resident orcas live in large pods but instead the captive ones are living in pod sizes only natural to transient orcas. This is just another example of how captivity strips orcas of everything important to them, instead of living highly sociable family orientated lives, they're restricted to living in artificial small pods of highly agitated and aggressive orcas which causes them to suffer mentally and physically.
